A REIMAGINED VILLA AND ORANGERy FOR EVENTS

Maribor’s Ljudski vrt is best known for football rather than nineteenth-century architecture. Yet the district owes its name to the landscaped grounds of Langer’s Villa, a former summer residence that predates the stadium by more than a century. Its restored rooms, exhibition space, and collonaded frontage now give event organisers a reason to look beyond the stands. They offer a unique, foliage-lined setting for gatherings.

Glassworks owner Joseph Langer commissioned the villa in 1843 as a summer retreat, surrounded by landscaped parkland. Langer stipulated that locals could use the park after his death. In 1874, his widow Katarina sold the estate to the municipality, and the grounds became known as Volksgarten, translated into Slovenian as Ljudski vrt. It later housed a restaurant, a children’s shelter, a youth home, a hospitality school and sports organisations. These changes altered the building and made it part of everyday Maribor life. Its current programme continues that civic role, accommodating local organisations alongside spaces for meetings, exhibitions and visitors.

The venue features two main halls with capacities of 80 to 100 people, plus dedicated exhibition space. A modular meeting room, café and loggia broaden the possibilities beyond a single presentation space. These features help link the heritage setting to meetings and gatherings, while an accompanying exhibition could give delegates another reason to circulate. The renewed park areas further support events around the building.

The revival of the one-off orangery

The most arresting discovery during restoration was beneath the floor. Conservators uncovered the villa’s former orangery, including original paving from 1843 and a double heating channel that once supplied warm air to plants unable to withstand the local climate. Its incorporation within the residential building makes it particularly unusual. The surviving fabric has been preserved, giving visitors another heritage feature to discover during events and allowing them to see an element of the house that later alterations had concealed.

Architectural bureau MF arhitektura worked with conservation specialists and other project partners on the comprehensive restoration between 2024 and 2026. Šport Maribor now manages the villa, which combines its institutional occupants with a public programme of exhibitions and gatherings.
