Bestselling author Dan Brown, creator of the iconic Robert Langdon character, visited Signal Space, Prague’s digital art gallery, on October 21. He was especially captivated by a laser installation by Japanese artist Shohei Fujimoto and spent nearly twenty minutes watching it. He also suggested that the gallery could make an extraordinary setting for a thriller. The visit also had a literary connection: his latest novel, The Secret of Secrets, set partly in Prague, mentions Signal Festival.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. And we stood there for, you know, 20 minutes just watching these lights,” said Dan Brown of the installation by Japanese artist Shohei Fujimoto, his favourite work on the tour. The encounter with contemporary art also prompted him to consider what his best-known character, Robert Langdon, might take away from a visit.

“I write a character, Robert Langdon, who knows a lot about classical art, not a lot about modern art. And so this contemporary exhibit is something that he would learn from, that I certainly have learned from. And you never know. This would be an incredible place to set some sort of thriller,” Brown said in an interview after the tour.

From the pages of a novel to the gallery

Brown’s connection to the Signal brand extends to his fiction. His novel The Secret of Secrets, whose story is tied to Prague, mentions Signal Festival. During his visit, he explained that he considers the festival an important part of the city and admires the way it works with Prague’s architecture.

Although Dan Brown missed this year’s festival, he visited Signal Space, which welcomes visitors year-round, accompanied by Petr Onufer of Argo, the book’s Czech translator. “What I like most about the art is that all the artists are living. They’re all making this art right now. It’s fresh, it’s new, it’s exciting. And I think everybody should come here,” he said.

A first year of international recognition

The largest digital art gallery in the Czech Republic opened in Prague’s historic Old Town Market Hall in October 2025. Created by the team behind Signal Festival, it offers a year-round space for contemporary digital art, immersive projections, and interactive installations. During its first year, Signal Space received two international awards: Inavation Award 2026 and PRIX NUMIX 2026.

“When Dan Brown visited, it was wonderful to see his sheer curiosity. Here was someone who fuels the imaginations of millions of readers, utterly captivated by what artists can do with light. That is exactly what we want to give visitors: reasons to explore the unfamiliar and come back. As we enter our second year, we are taking Signal Space further, opening up lively conversations with artists and giving people the chance to try their hand at making art,” says Martin Pošta, founder of Signal Space.

The gallery is also entering its second year with an expanded events program. Alongside its exhibitions, it offers opportunities to meet artists, Signal Talks discussions, creative Signal Lab workshops, activities for children, and music evenings through Signal Sounds and Signal Lates.
