Digital solutions for urban environment and governance

Tallinn and Tartu in cooperation with a delegation of Estonian IT businesses will host a business seminar on future city solutions in the Estonian Pavilion at Dubai EXPO on January 10. The seminar will be opened by Tallinn Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart.

Estonia’s two largest cities, Tallinn and Tartu, will showcase best practices of cooperation between cities and businesses that have helped to bring new smart products and services to the market for sustainable urban development. These provide technology-based solutions to current urban challenges.

Mihhail Kõlvart

Tallinn Mayor

Tallinn Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart said: “The aim of the World Expo is to support Estonian companies in showcasing their success stories and to showcase Tallinn as an ideal location for developing technological innovations. Tallinn’s ambition is to become a carbon-neutral city by implementing different technologies and innovations in cooperation with businesses so that we can offer an excellent living environment and quality of life, as well as smart and data-driven urban governance,” said Kõlvart.

The seminar will focus on solutions for the city of the future and display technological solutions and products for cities offered by Estonian companies with international operations. The IT enterprises Auve Tech, DATEL, Telia, Mobi Lab, Positium, Bercman Technologies and EyeVi Technologies have been testing and developing various products in cooperation with Tallinn and Tartu.

Auve Tech, a company that develops and manufactures autonomous transport solutions, offers a full service including autonomous vehicles and their integration into different environments. The company is developing the world’s first self-driving hydrogen vehicle, which has completed its first test kilometres in the cities.

The software and information systems developer DATEL who is behind Tallinn’s spatial planning information system has launched a new product for metropolitan cities: an early warning system based on EU satellite data that can detect the dislodgment or subsidence of large infrastructure objects such as bridges, pipelines and large buildings with an accuracy of up to 1 millimetre.

As one of Europe’s largest telecommunications companies, Telia Company offers services to both private and business customers. As a product for cities, it has developed Crowd Insights, a service that uses anonymous aggregated data from the mobile network to analyse people’s movements and thus make data-driven management decisions.

Mobi Lab, a design and software development company, has developed a mobile app for Tartu bus schedules which allows users to view real-time information on Tartu city buses from their smartphones. They have also developed augmented reality solutions for the Estonian Museum of Natural History.

Positium, which analyses mobile positioning data, has helped reorganise the entire network of bus routes in the city of Tartu, taking into account people’s mobility needs. Bercman Technologies develops and sells products and services that improve road safety. One of their products is smart crossing lanes, which have also been installed in Tartu. EyeVi Technologies, which offers innovative in-car mapping technology, automatically detects road signs and road surface defects and creates accurate maps for self-driving cars.

The aim of participating in the World Expo is to help Estonian companies and organisations build contacts in the Middle East region as well as globally, and thereby increase sales of their products and services. The World Expo is open in Dubai until the end of March 2022.
