Once you arrive here, additional logistics become redundant: the lake, promenade and landmarks are within arm’s reach. Keszthely is quaint enough to offer an escape from the usual generic hotel design, yet brimming with content that gives guests reasons to stay and explore. In the hotel’s hinterland lies one of the most appealing cities along the Balaton Riviera, with a storied culture, scenic promenades, and the famous Festetics Palace, which still exudes a sense of aristocracy.

Lake Balaton hides more than meets the eye.

This duality imbues the location with added value: active guests can revel in the sunsets, water, the relaxed pace of life, and the laidback side of Balaton, while history buffs can venture into the city’s past, discover its architecture, and try incentive programmes on the western side of the lake. Were we to describe the location in one sentence, we would say that Sirius is not merely a lakefront hotel, but a well-positioned, easily accessible starting point for understanding modern Balaton – more elegant, tranquil and boutique than expected.

The hotel is easy to reach for guests arriving by car or shuttle. Keszthely is set on the western edge of Lake Balaton, meaning the hotel is not directly located on the main transit arteries. Still, reaching the hotel is easy, and the paths are picturesque. Traversing the roads leading to Keszthely is, in fact, part of the experience, as it gradually puts guests into a more relaxed lake rhythm.

For regional events, incentive programmes and boutique events, the location is sustainable, but mostly for guests from Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Slovakia and northern Italy. Air accessibility remains a major impediment, as event attendees must transfer at one of the larger nearby airports. Hence, Sirius is not the most self-evident choice for large international events, but a no-brainer for boutique events where the destination is part of the event narrative.

Cycling is an excellent way to discover Balaton, its city centre, and the surrounding area.

In Keszthely itself, orientation is straightforward. The hotel overlooks the lake and the promenade, reducing the need for extra transfers after arrival. A key advantage is the excellent connectivity to the lake paths, which beckon guests to venture out on two wheels. Establishing a bike rental service was a prudent choice by the hotel management, complementing the overall offerings. Cycling is an excellent way to discover Balaton, its city centre, and the surrounding area. Air accessibility might not be the hotel’s greatest advantage. Still, it is good enough, enjoyable and experience-driven, supporting the hotel’s boutique and incentive character.

The architecture is made for the contemporary design-savvy traveller – toned down, without excess glamour. Sirius Hotel Superior does not attempt to compete with the monumental historical charm of Keszthely or the sweeping views of Balaton. Still, it wisely takes on a supporting role, providing a discreet frame for enjoying the surroundings. Its most salient architectural element is the intertwinement with the lake, light and greenery. The exterior is appealing, refined and functional, albeit not exactly iconic. We were more impressed by the interior, dominated by undulating lines, bright hues, and modern pieces that do not overwhelm the senses but leave guests relaxed. As soon as we set foot in the lobby, we felt the hotel swears by relaxed elegance, not the typical hotel prestige. All the facilities are bright, spacious, and warm enough that guests do not feel as if they have entered a sterile new property.

Sirius is not a designer manifesto but a tidy, modern, and elegant lakeshore hotel whose elegance stems from location, light, and toned-down opulence.

The connecting corridors and halls between the interior rooms, wellness, garden and lake work smoothly. As abundant daylight floods the facilities through vast glass surfaces and views of the imposing Balaton appear, it becomes evident that the design is second to the ambient. That is perhaps the hotel’s greatest aesthetic virtue. The interior follows the logic of a contemporary resort hotel: comfort takes precedence over experiment, and functionalism outweighs designer ego. Some details could bear a more distinctive author’s signature or could be connected to the local character of Balaton. Regardless, the hotel oozes harmony. Sirius is not a designer manifesto but a tidy, modern, and elegant lakeshore hotel whose elegance stems from location, light, and toned-down opulence.

Breakfast and dinner were included in the hotel stay, a practical and welcome solution for guests. Both are served buffet-style, but the offerings, especially at breakfast, stay on the safe side. The juices and automated coffee machine are not the best, but a standard selection of cold cuts, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables will satisfy most guests. At the same time, epicureans will undoubtedly resort to some more appealing alternatives around Keszthely. We must applaud the relatively diverse and occasionally ingenious combination of main dishes at dinner, which eclipsed the run–of–the–mill hotel offerings. Nevertheless, we missed a more thoughtful healthy corner, local staples and better labelling of products, especially the cheeses and other regional delicacies. The hotel should aim to emulate Balaton’s gastronomic heritage.

In the future, we expect more local identity, dishes presented more conspicuously and more culinary bravery.

The staff appeared professional, and the table service worked like clockwork. Still, we felt as if the entire gastronomic experience remained too predictable. Given the location’s potential and quality, the hotel’s ambition, and the region’s prospects, the hotel could go a step further in this field. In the future, we expect more local identity, dishes presented more conspicuously and more culinary bravery.

Hotel rooms

If you have the option, book a room with lake views. The vistas are romantic year-round and have become one of the main reasons guests flock here. While the standard rooms are relatively spacious, they all feature balconies that make them feel even larger.

While this room might not be spectacular, it is suitable, functional, and, above all, aligned with the philosophy of the hotel that encourages guests to spend most of their time actively.

Our eyes were drawn to the intriguing wallpaper, its colours alluding to the nearby lake and nature. Even though most of the furniture is rather generic and made of oak, we were impressed by the excellent bed with an elegant light-blue headboard. Likewise, the charming couches fit the design. The bathroom sticks to the tried-and-tested grey tiles. The Etro cosmetics imbue it with character. While this room might not be spectacular, it is suitable, functional, and, above all, aligned with the philosophy of the hotel that encourages guests to spend most of their time actively – on or next to Lake Balaton, not behind four walls.

Like most hotels nowadays, this one, too, follows an established practice: the minibar is empty. This dearth of extras is what is missing to elevate the experience. In short, the rooms are suitable and comfortable but lack wow elements.

Event centre

Sirius Hotel Superior is not a classic event heavyweight, but rather a boutique incentive hotel next to Lake Balaton, where it is sensible to connect events with the lake, wellness offerings, cuisine, and active exploration of the surroundings. The conference area is thus compact but apt: tucked away on the ground floor is a multifunctional hall measuring 113 square metres, flooded with daylight. It can be split into two halves, each measuring 56.5 square metres. In maximum capacity, the hall can accommodate up to 110 attendees in a theatre setting or up to 120 attendees for standing receptions.

DESSERT – The extras

The additional offering of Sirius Hotel Superior is strongest where it naturally connects with the lake, wellness and the relaxed rhythm of Balaton. The spa, replete with pools, saunas, a private garden and lake views, is undoubtedly the hotel’s trump card and one of the reasons many guests choose to prolong their stay here. We also found their “to-go sandwiches” charming and practical. This small yet meaningful gesture is aimed at the modern guest – one who wishes to explore the surroundings, head out for a saunter, a hike, or a cycling tour, without being tied to a hotel restaurant. A key part of the additional offering is also the possibility to cycle and explore Balaton’s paths. Keszthely and the surroundings seem ideal for laid-back discoveries on two wheels. That is one of the reasons bike rental is paramount for the hotel story. In no way spectacular, the extras are nonetheless thoughtful, useful and in harmony with the character of the lakeside hotel.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

The most obvious setback is the overly generic cuisine, especially breakfast. In a hotel with grand ambitions and such an impressive location, we expected more local flavours, a connection to the Balaton story, and a brave display of local and regional products. Another minor drawback is the minibar in the room, which is empty. Even if this has become a common hotel practice, a few local staples, a bottle of wine or a select non-alcoholic beverage would ensure a more personalised welcome. Finally, we have second thoughts about the hotel’s event positioning. The hotel has great potential for boutique events, but should present its conference story more confidently, as a single package and in closer connection to the destination.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

The most noticeable surprise is the wellness. Featuring pools, saunas, a garden and views of the glistening lake, the spa is the heart of the hotel and the reason why Sirius becomes memorable. The spa is not just an add-on, but an essential part of the stay and a space where the hotel best shows its character.

The second positive surprise is the tranquil location, a stone’s throw away from Balaton. Sirius Hotel Superior has the rare ability to help guests immediately wind down. The lake views, the promenade, and the ample opportunities to stroll along the vast body of water create an inviting atmosphere, ideal for incentive programmes, boutique events, cycling trips, and relaxed weekend escapes.

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

The bed linen with the OEXO-TEX tag is a tiny yet paramount detail that shows the hotel considered the quality of its materials and the well-being of its guests. Even more convincing proof of the hotel’s sustainability is their encouragement of soft mobility. The hotel offers bike rentals, guided e-bike tours, integration with the BalatonBike365 app, and cycling maps. For a destination set along Lake Balaton, this is a sensible and authentic solution.

Cycling is more than recreation here: it is one of the ultimate ways to discover Keszthely, the shores of Lake Balaton, and the surrounding area layer by layer.

The sustainability story is enriched by the measures taken by the hotel owner, Adventor Hotels. They have implemented waste management and alternative heating solutions.

CREATIVITY

The hotel works best when meetings do not remain confined to the halls but naturally spill out onto the terrace, the spa, the esplanade, or are combined with cycling. The hotel’s greatest untapped potential lies in developing noteworthy Balaton-inspired programmes: from cycling incentive experiences and guided wine tours with local winemakers to wellness rituals and culinary stories. Sirius boasts an excellent location, has the right rhythm and great foundations. To ensure it lingers in the minds of event organisers long after they leave, though, it needs a bit more bold contriving.

Its story is straightforward: with a phenomenal lakefront location on Lake Balaton, splendid wellness facilities, comfortable rooms, and quality amenities, the hotel is well-suited for guests seeking a relaxed, elegant, and tranquil experience. The property understands well that its greatest advantage is the surrounding environment, which is why it wisely includes it in the holistic package.

As an event hotel, its speciality is boutique events, incentive programmes, water-inspired retreats and small-scale events, where the dramaturgy of the stay eclipses the event hall itself. For large-scale events or complex productions, though, this hotel is not the most obvious choice. Attendees who cherish a relaxed lakefront environment should look no further.

Contributing to the hotel’s overall good score are its enviable location, room comfort, staff professionalism, wellness offerings, and general tidiness. There is room for improvement in the cuisine, in presenting a more pronounced local identity, and in crafting a more confident event story. Still, the overall impression is highly positive. Sirius is a chic, serene and convincing lakefront hotel with immense potential. Put simply, the water, peace, wellness, and the laid-back rhythm of Balaton make it a great choice. If the management decides to show a bit more culinary bravery and curate the event possibilities, Sirius Hotel Superior has all the prerequisites to establish itself as one of the most alluring boutique event hotels lining Lake Balaton.
