BOUTIQUE ELEGANCE WITH A PRLEK SOUL

LOCATION

A former homestead gave birth to a resort that does not seek luxury in spectacle but rather in providing an unmatched location.

As we set out for Vinski Vrh, a quaint hamlet atop a hill, we remembered once more why the hills of Ormož and Slovenian Jeruzalem are not merely part of a wine region but among the most scenic cultural landscapes in the country. Wine Paradise Glavinič is tucked away in Miklavž, next to Ormož, at a sun-drenched location amidst the vineyards, orchards and softly curved hills of Prlekija. This is not a location you would reach by chance. You must deviate from the main road connecting Ormož and Jeruzalem, taking you on a zigzagging ride through the vineyards. The location is, in fact, the essence of the story. Vinski Vrh offers sweeping views of Jeruzalem and the Ormož-Ljutomer hills. Yet it is secluded enough from the other towns for the guest to comprehend how the owners’ ancestors could have lived purely from the soil, grapes, and the rhythm of the seasons. The Glavinič family began working in tourism around 2020, but even before that, they rented out an apartment in a renovated, over-a-hundred-year-old wine cellar. In 2022, they erected the first wooden “kajža” (a humble country house), and in 2025, they completed their expansion of the tourist farm by inaugurating nine rooms at “Four Apples”. The apples here correspond to four stars. A former homestead thus gave birth to a resort that does not seek luxury in spectacle but rather in providing an unmatched location, views, and authentic space. Given the full occupancy, it is evident that Slovenia direly needed such a property.

ACCESSIBILITY

The best wine stories usually do not begin at the first motorway exit. Likewise, to reach Vinski Raj Glavinič, guests must venture on roads that teleport them away from the everyday – through Ormož, past humble villages, lush vineyards and blooming orchards, towards Vinski Vrh near Miklavž at Ormož. Reaching the hotel is the most sensible and comfortable choice, given that it was designed as a quaint countryside resort rather than a city hotel. Still, public transport can take guests to Ormož, from where they need to hail a taxi or shuttle. This last leg of the journey is part of the experience, as the landscape begins showing the silhouette of the wine hills of the Prlekija region.

The surrounding undulating wine hills are ideal for leisurely rides on e-bikes, saunters through the vineyards, and stops at local producers.

To reach the hotel, guests need two hours from Ljubljana or Zagreb and an hour and a half from Graz. The best starting points for exploring the region are Ptuj and Murska Sobota, both about half an hour away. Once you park, your vehicle will likely stay there until you leave. The surrounding undulating wine hills are ideal for leisurely rides on e-bikes, saunters through the vineyards, and stops at local producers. Here, accessibility is more than logistics; it’s an introduction to the destination’s rhythm. Accessibility is part of the experience.

COLD STARTER - Architecture and aesthetics

Upon reaching the hotel, we were most impressed by the fact that the design of Wine Paradise Glavinič does not vie for attention. It does not flex muscles or compete with the views of the wine hills. In Jeruzalemske gorice, this is the only way. Hiša Marija is designed as a modern interpretation of a rural homestead, where tradition is not consigned to a museum exhibition, but transforms into a scenography for the stay. Nine rooms carry names that sound like an inventory of Prlekija winemaking memories: Wine Press, Rural Courtyard, Granary, Farm, Farmhouse, Wine Archive, Wine Cellar, Woodshed and Barn. Wood, stone, ceramics, antique objects, soft textures and voluminous windows dominate the rooms. The finest details are those that do not serve as decoration but, incognito, explain how and when the house grew. The design works best when it allows light from the window to stream in and when views of the vineyards and orchards beckon guests outdoors. Then Wine Paradise Glavinič becomes precisely what the name promises: not spectacle, but a quiet, well-designed haven among the undulating wine hills. Not being a classic conference hotel is an advantage. Here, they don’t offer grand halls, but scaled experiences.

Here, events can start in the meeting room, continue in the vineyards and conclude behind a community table where local wine does more to connect groups than ten motivational speeches.

This is a space for boutique groups of directors, strategic retreats, incentive programmes and meetings where people can hear and talk to one another after a long time, without the noise. The environment is the greatest asset. Vineyards, views, wine tastings, the so-called “Black kitchen”, wellness, bio pool, e-bikes, and the laid-back rhythm of Prlekija create a natural setting for programmes that offer more than just a presentation, a coffee break, and three pauses. Here, events can start in the meeting room, continue in the vineyards and conclude behind a community table where local wine does more to connect groups than ten motivational speeches.

WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience

Restaurant Črna kuhna was evidently one of the most sought-after culinary spots in the Prlekija region during our visit. Every table filled to the last is always a good omen, but also a most opportune time to see how the staff perform under pressure. Indeed, they did well – exuding kindness, spirit and hospitality, even if they occasionally seemed overwhelmed by the full house. Service was somewhat slower, but the ambience remained relaxed, homely and free of excessive nervousness.

The culinary story takes traditional Prlek flavours and serves them in a modern interpretation.

While Črna kuhna is not a fine-dining address, it offers mouthwatering regional cuisine, where an open fire, local flavours and house wines play the lead role. This concept is utterly convincing, judging by the guests’ nodding and eating with gusto. On the other hand, the food was heavy and hearty, perhaps a bit too plentiful for the summer season. You will never leave hungry; the only question is whether you will be able to saunter amidst the vineyards afterwards. We were a bit less impressed by the promises of 100% local sourcing. If the kitchen has adopted a zero-kilometre policy, it should adhere to it. Was the salmon really caught in the nearby Drava or Mura rivers? Such details are barely noticeable, but can raise eyebrows when a hotel builds credibility on local sourcing. We see room for improvement at breakfast. We had high expectations, as the resort emphasises local and home-made ingredients and food. A part of the offering lived up to the expectations, although the entire menu is not yet as convincing as we would imagine, given the story. Breakfast is satisfactory and needs fine-tuning to meet the hotel’s ambitions. The hotel should pay attention to consistency. They should set aside storytelling about local ingredients and focus more on execution on the plate. While Restaurant Črna kuhna has charm, a loyal base of guests and the right foundations, it must be attentive that the kitchen keeps up with the story.

MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel

Hotel rooms

Each of the nine rooms in House Marija is different from the others, yet all take their names from winemaking and rural facilities of the past. We stayed in the Farm room, facing the north side of the estate. Even though we could not relish a spectacular sunset, we enjoyed the silence, soft light and subdued character. The room was spacious, tidy and modern, with details paying homage to rural life: wood, textures and farm motifs ooze homeliness without overt rusticity.

The real luxury amenity is not the bathtub set smack in the middle of the room, but the feeling that you can open the window in the morning, smell the vineyards and realise you are in no rush.

The number of designer tricks does not matter in an excellent hotel room, as long as the guest feels splendid at 10 PM or 7 AM. The Farm room passed this test with flying colours. Its bed was superb, the bathroom was modern and well-appointed, while the ambience was toned down and free of kitsch. We had a restful sleep, which is still one of the key criteria for a room’s quality. Conversely, the bathtub set in the living area was less convincing. It may seem appealing in online photos, but in reality, this element is more Instagrammable than functional. Perhaps the bathtub befits a romantic getaway, but a business guest cares more about spaciousness and functionality. If the hotel aims to address and charm business guests in the future, it should provide better work surfaces, lighting and more carefully considered charging areas. Nonetheless, the room is a compelling choice for a boutique retreat, an incentive trip, or a long weekend getaway. In Glavinič, they have taken notice of something many hotels forget: the real luxury amenity is not the bathtub set smack in the middle of the room, but the feeling that you can open the window in the morning, smell the vineyards and realise you are in no rush.

Meetings centre

Wine Paradise Glavinič has no classic conference hall, but in reality, it does not need one. The hotel is not the right address for large-scale conferences, but a property well suited to boutique teams who seek a retreat, focus and some fresh Prlek air. The restaurant easily doubles as a central workshop or wine-tasting space, and it caters to business luncheons and evening events. The real potential lies outside: next to the fireplace, on the terrace, amidst the vineyards, beside the pool or at the ping-pong table. In the summer months, the estate transforms into a natural stage for incentive programmes, teambuildings and guided retreats. PowerPoint presentations quickly lose their role here in favour of wine, views, genuine conversations and the sense that a team has truly left their office. Glavinič is not a conference centre. It is a superb space for memorable boutique events, though.

DESSERT – The extras

Wellness is one of the most welcome additions to the Wine Paradise Glavinič. The interior pool with an adjoining terrace is a nice enrichment of the hotel experience, offering guests something that is much appreciated after a day amidst the vineyards – water, serenity and views. The solution is charming, but a bit less logistically suitable. The entrance through the restaurant is cumbersome, especially when it is brimming with guests. Walking past buzzing tables in a swimming robe is not exactly the highlight of the hotel’s dramaturgy. That is why the outdoor bio-natural pool, which seems organically embedded in the estate, feels even more convincing. In the summer heat, it becomes the natural focal point of the estate – a place to cool down, peruse books or admire the rolling wine hills. Complemented by saunas, fitness, e-bikes, vineyard walks and the chance to explore the surroundings peacefully, it becomes clear that the hotel was made for more than one stay or a dinner.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

Breakfast proved to be the biggest drawback of the stay. In an estate that revolves its story around local, home-made and in-house products, expectations are high. Hence, the disappointment was even greater when we found products that have nothing in common with the promise of local and zero-kilometre. Breakfast seems to be part of the offering that the team has not dedicated as much attention to as the restaurant, rooms, or architecture. That is a pity, as an excellent breakfast often lingers in guests’ minds after departing. Given the boutique “four apple” categorisation, it should be more refined, local and personal. The team would be wise to review standards at similar four-star abodes and ask themselves what they can do to elevate the breakfast experience further: from a selection of homemade products to presentation, service, and coffee. The watered-down coffee simply does not go with the boutique story. If Glavinič wishes to sell a paradise in Prlekija, the breakfast cannot begin with poor service.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

We were most impressed by the wine story that flows through the entire experience. It is not just an add-on but its foundation: from the design, room names, cuisine, and views to the Glavinič family heritage. It is great to see how a former homestead has blossomed into a boutique resort without losing touch with the soil, vineyards or local environment. More importantly, the project encourages local expenditure and offers guests a reason to stay longer than for a glass of wine in the Prlekija region. The wine story in the resort is well-rounded; they offer all the local staples, from šipon, chardonnay, muscat, traminec, and muscat ottonel to pinot noir. They produce all the wine themselves, meaning the wines are fresh, accessible, and primarily intended for guests and local buyers. At the Wine Paradise Glavinič, wine is not just the accompaniment to the story. The wine is the story itself.

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

Sustainability at Wine Paradise Glavinič is not merely a marketing sticker but a logical continuation of the story of a rural homestead. The EU Ecolabel attests to their aspirations.

A simple walk through the vineyards or a jump into the bio pool is enough to understand their story.

We were most convinced by their tangible solutions: certified ecological farming, a natural, chlorine-free bio pool purified by plant-based filters, and ecological winemaking spanning more than 4 hectares. The renovation also followed sustainable design principles, as a wooden structure and materials from renewable sources enriched the existing building. Here, sustainability does not need many words. A simple walk through the vineyards or a jump into the bio pool is enough to understand their story.

CREATIVITY

Wine Paradise Glavinič does not aim to reinvent the wheel of the hospitality industry. Its most laudable idea is to have remained loyal to its beginnings. Wine is not a mere marketing add-on but the common thread connecting architecture, room names, cuisine, and experiences. Such conceptual consistency is still rare in Slovenia. Would we have appreciated more boldness? Certainly. A few design pieces, wine interpretations and interactive content here and there would undoubtedly elevate the concept. Today, creativity is found in the estate’s facilities, but not in its programme. Regardless, the greatest creative feat of the resort is not aiming to become something it is not. Now, it only needs a few bold ideas to make its wine story truly unforgettable.

FINAL IMPRESSION AND CREDIBILITY

In their aspiration for success, the owners and managers of Wine Paradise Glavinič faced a challenging task. They wanted to connect a slew of target groups on one estate: individual guests, gourmets, wine aficionados, families, couples, wellness guests and boutique business groups. Their ambitious model seems to be working, although it requires extraordinary consistency in execution.

Undoubtedly, Wine Paradise Glavinič is one of the most compelling tourist projects in this part of Slovenia.

Its greatest value is that it creates space for Prlekija to develop high-quality incentive programmes, retreats and boutique business meetings. However, such groups are demanding – they expect a holistic experience without any drawbacks: from the reception, room, dinner, breakfast, coffee breaks, logistics, to fine hotel details.

Currently, the team is overwhelmed by the resounding success since opening. The project has a well-established story, an exceptional location, a compelling wine foundation, and tremendous potential, but the service does not live up to the expectations on all levels. The team has room to improve consistency, particularly in breakfast, service levels, and staying true to the local story. Luckily, these things need only minor tweaks, and the hotel has a solid foundation. But to grow from a charming and successful resort into a truly reliable boutique hotel, the hotel will need to put its best foot forward. The paradise awaits. Now, the team has to reenact it every day.
