According to the latest Eurobarometer surveys, immigration remains one of the key challenges discussed by Europeans. As migration management ranks among the EU’s most important priorities, Lithuania has been ranked 3rd in Europe and 6th globally as one of the best countries for relocation in 2026.
Against this backdrop, Vilnius is highlighting another side of the story: how newcomers positively contribute to the places they decide to call home.

Taking place on September 5 in Bernardinai Garden, the festival, which is part of Vilnius Fiesta, brings together the city’s international community and celebrates the growing number of people from around the world who have made Vilnius their home. For the first time, the festival will include four different award categories dedicated specifically to recognising their contribution.
The awards will celebrate international residents who strengthen Vilnius in different ways – from creating businesses and workplaces, to enriching Vilnius’ cultural and culinary scene, and sharing the city’s story with the world. For example, Eskedar Tihalun has built a successful coffee business while introducing Ethiopian coffee culture to Vilnius and creating local jobs, while Spanish musician Sandra Carrillo contributes to Vilnius’ creative community. Another resident, Ibrahim Uyar (known as Curly & Lithuania) from Turkey, proudly showcases Vilnius and Lithuania to a global audience on social media. Four winners will be recognised for helping make Vilnius a more vibrant, open and connected city.
“Vilnius has always been built by people who chose it – from the first merchants invited by the city’s founder Gediminas’ letters in the 14th century to today’s international community. Now we want to celebrate those who are giving back to the city either by creating workplaces, boosting its visibility globally or enriching it culturally,” says Indrė Laučienė, Head of the Foreign Talent Department at Go Vilnius. “We intend the awards to become an annual tradition, recognising that a city is not only built by those who were born there, but also by those who decide to become part of its future.”
Today, Vilnius is home to around 78,000 foreign residents from 143 countries, with the international community continuing to grow – increasing by 4.4% over the past year. Over nearly five years, International House Vilnius has supported more than 62,000 newcomers in settling into life in the Lithuanian capital. Social initiatives help to navigate matters from everyday integration to professional opportunities. Many foreigners say the city’s appeal lies in its compact layout, strong work–life balance, widespread English proficiency and relatively affordable cost of living compared with many Western European capitals.
“I chose to stay in Vilnius because I saw a real gap in the market for my services, especially within the English-speaking community. I also liked that Vilnius felt smaller and easier to settle into than many other cities. What surprised me most was how willing people are to help. Before moving here, I thought I would have to figure everything out on my own, but I quickly realised how kind and supportive the locals are. People back in the UK often say it must take a lot of courage to move abroad. But once they visit Lithuania, they understand how much calmer the pace of life is here. I think that is a big part of what makes people want to stay – it certainly worked for me,” said James Rowland, an English entrepreneur building a coaching business in Vilnius.
Everyone is invited to nominate international residents who have made a meaningful contribution to the city in business, culture, gastronomy or international outreach. Nominations can be submitted by anyone in one of the four award categories, whether it is a single name, a short story about their contribution, or several people who deserve recognition.
