Any congress guest to Maribor should go see Pivola, the Botanical Garden of University of Maribor. Pivola is set under the green slopes of Pohorje mountain and provides walking paths among the domestic and foreign flora. Botanical garden, set on eight hectares of a former castle garden, is full of autochthonous and foreign sorts of trees, bushes and flowers. The beautiful castle, over-looking the garden, is also open for public.

Garden is open from April to October. In April more than one hundred species of daffodils bloom, in May rhododendron blooms, while in June the colour variety is the biggest. Throughout the whole summer, the garden welcomes into its pleasant shades under the mighty trees, there are thousands and thousands of different roses blossoming. In autumn, diverse fruits and all possible shades of autumn colours are on display.

Visitors can see trees, bushes, perennials, medicinal herbs and aquatic plants from Asia, Africa, America and Australia. There are also many endangered species. The most astonishing are the exotic trees that include 120-year-old Sequoias, a Thuja tree with a circumference of 364 cm, Caucasian fir tree, Tsuga Canadensis, Lawson’s cypress trees, Red leafed beech tree, Larch trees, Magnolias, and Yew trees, …

Along the relaxing strolls on beautiful paths between plants, the visitors to the Botanical Garden Pivola can also visit the garden’s occasional as well as permanent exhibitions on, for example, hunting or geological and archaeological findings and history. The garden provides guided tours also in winter, if so desired. Incentive programmes come in three versions: visit to botanical garden; visit to the castle, estate, and botanical garden; or a visit to the castle, estate, botanical garden and to the Meranovo wine cellar and museum.
