Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, has recently received another globally-renowned award. This time for its role in the quality and sustainability of food provision to the city. Its Green Supply Chains project was at at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London acknowledged with the International Travel and Tourism Award (ITTA) being highly commended in the category Best Food Destination.

The Best Food Destination award recognizes and rewards the destinations (and businesses) that have spent time supporting and promoting food within the destination, through imaginative marketing and PR campaigns, as well as offering a consistently unique and memorable experience for visitors. The mark of a desirable culinary destination is a place where good quality, and consistently unique and memorable, food and drink products and experiences take place.

Green Supply Chains project was created in 2015 in a collaboration between the City of Ljubljana’s Rural Development Department, Ljubljana Tourism, ‘sustainable tourism factory’ GoodPlace, and the Jarina cooperative. Through sub-projects Locally Grown Food Exchange, Culinary Calendar and Ljubljana Breakfast, the Green Supply Chains provides a local, authentic and sustainably focused gastronomic experience for citizens and visitors alike.

Additionally, the project gives hotels and restaurants an opportunity to offer more variety while ensuring the producers with an extra source of income. »In this way,« says Ljubljana Touirsm, »we are fulfilling our mission in the sustainable development of tourism, while not only raising awareness of the importance of consuming fresh, locally produced food but also stimulating the local economy and reducing the carbon footprint.«

Ljubljana, however, is not a novelty on the culinary map of the world. In March this year, the Slovenia’s capital hosted the first ever European Food Summit, the largest regional food event. Right now, through the whole month of November, the city is hosting the third November Gourmet. And in 2021, Ljubljana will be one of the culinary stars as that year Slovenia will be an active holder of the prestigious title European Region of Gastronomy 2021.
