Winter and holiday celebrations in Maribor, the Styrian capital of Slovenia, have started already on the 22nd of November and will last until the month of January. Some of the events are even extended to February and March. Today, however, is that day that when residents of both, the city and its surrounding Styrian region, are flocking towards the city centre to witness the most ‘enlightened’ day of the year. At 17.00h the decorative lights of the city, that mark and celebrate the festive month of December, will get switched on at different squares and streets.

Lighting the lights on the Christmas tree and the performance by Koledniki (Koledari) by Academic Folklore Student Group.

Before then, already at 15.00h and until the 18.00h, interested visitors are at the Trg Svobode Square encouraged to make lanterns with which the gathered crowd will then walk through the city.

  • 16.45h: Grajski Trg Square
