THE THIRD OLDEST PHARMACY IN EUROPE
Right up until today the mighty Minorite monastery, with its unusual blue colour, continues to paint the image of the small town Olimje. This treasure, which vicars like to show to visitors, is a pharmacy or, more accurately, the third oldest pharmacy in Europe. The tradition of making herbal potions has been kept alive to this day and you can still come to the pharmacy, select your own tea and replenish your health and energy. From time immemorial vicars in the old pharmacy have been experts in making healing tea. Visitors might be shown some secret recipes they can even try at home, but in any case, they will most certainly be served their famous “vicar drops”.
In the Kozjansko region, nature is still left quite intact and there are many medicinal plants. It is the Monastery’s wish that the visitors in Olimje become aware of their benefit but more importantly, see how simple it is to grow them in their home gardens. They have set up a botanical garden with nearly two hundred species of medical herbs. Each exhibited plant has a sign with its Slovenian and Latin names, and which illness it helps to treat.
