AN IDYLLIC SETTING AMONG HILLS COVERED IN VINEYARDS
The Istenič family’s production of sparkling wines broke new ground in terms of private production since all the larger wineries were socially owned, with only one of them producing a traditional sparkling wine. Istenič Winery was the first private company in Slovenia and in federal Yugoslavia to produce sparkling wine using the traditional method, and later developed a successful form of wine tourism.
Istenič Winery places great focus on the culture of drinking sparkling wines. Their tasting room can accommodate up to 80 guests. Cold charcuterie and cheeses are offered with the wines, but there is also an extensive range of warm dishes that can be served if arranged in advance.
Their sparkling wines have won 10 champion titles, 66 gold and grand gold medals, and 44 silver medals. Some of the most prestigious prizes include the three Prix d’Excellence in Paris, a gold medal in Verona and the two champion titles in 2005 in Ljubljana and Gornja Radgona. In 1992 Slovenian agricultural journalists chose Istenič’s Barbara as the champion Slovenian wine.
