More events, more participants: in 2019, Zurich recorded a growth in its event market in comparison with the previous year. Unfortunately, due to the current situation, the year 2020 will be completely different.

The Destination Report for the period January to December 2019 shows a positive development in Zurich’s congress market: the number of events held at event hotels rose to 13,422 individual events, 3 percent more than in the previous year. The number of participants and the overall surface area used also registered an increase of 4 percent and 7 percent respectively.

This development had an impact on the occupancy rate of conference hotels in the Zurich region. In average, the hotels recorded an occupancy rate of 30 percent of their meeting spaces, which represents a 1.5 percent increase compared to 2018. Considering only the second and third quarter of 2019, the occupancy rate rose by 28 percent in comparison to the previous year. Zurich’s conference hotels also recorded the highest average occupancy rate in a Swiss city comparison, 5 percent above the Swiss average.

About the MICEview Destination Report

The survey evaluated conferences and events held at 23 congress hotels and 8 event venues, with a total capacity of 371 meeting rooms covering an available event surface of 32,615 square meters (351,065 sq ft).

Such a well-founded MICE Destination Report is made possible by drawing on the joint database of Zürich Tourism and MICEview. The market research company, MICEview, gathers event data directly from the congress hotels in 34 destinations – including Zurich – on a daily basis. The report was also supplemented by event statistics that Zürich Tourism collects directly from hotels and event locations twice a year. The MICE Destination Report Zurich is published every six months.
