For the sixth time, Ljubljana has made the Global TOP 100 Sustainable Destinations list, maintaining its position as one of the world’s most sustainable destinations. This year the international jury was impressed by the Culture on the web project, a subpage on the Visit Ljubljana website, which was created during the quarantine period.

Green Destinations is a non-profit international organization that uses a series of strict criteria to assess and reward best practices in global green and sustainable tourism. Every year it organizes Global Green Destinations Days, one of the largest international conferences on sustainable tourism. The Sustainable Top 100 competition is organized to showcase sustainable tourism stories and good practices of destinations, as inspiring examples to others, to tour operators and to travellers. The award ceremony took place on October 6, as part of the Global Green Destinations Days event, which happened online this year.

This year the international jury was particularly impressed by the Culture on the web project, a subpage on the Visit Ljubljana website, which was created during the quarantine period. At the mentioned subpage, Ljubljana Tourism was collecting all the cultural online content that several cultural institutions prepared when they remained closed. The very diverse online content (virtual exhibitions, films, on-line concerts, on-line theatre performances etc.) were free of charge and shared regularly via the Ljubljana Tourism webpage, social media channels and newsletter. As the project proved very successful and popular, Ljubljana Tourism decided to upgrade it in the post-corona period and together with cultural institutions prepared a virtual exhibition CoronaCulture, which shows how the city remained culturally vibrant during the lockdown.

Ljubljana first made the Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in 2014 and has retained its place on the list this year, making it the most decorated city for sustainable tourism achievements and the only city in the world to make the list six times.
