OLDEST BENEDICTINE MONASTERY IN AUSTRIA
Upon entering the Schlosshotel Mondsee, one can almost feel the history of it. The oldest Benedictine monastery in Austria was built in 748 and was one of the spiritual centres of Europe. The monks collected precious artefacts, were well educated and offered quarters for travellers. In 1810 the monastery became a castle: Napoleon gave it to the earl Wrede. The mundane life moved into the ancient walls and the people in it traded goods, celebrated big parties and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. All these things stayed the same and are even more present nowadays.
