The hotel is situated in a spectacular location on a hill above the tourist centre in Ribčev Laz. Its position, in return, ensures intimacy, and at the same time, offers guests gorgeous views of the surroundings. At the same spot once operated Hotel Kompas, whose unbridled development shared the fate of the destinations’ transition. Today, however, the hotel has been set free in the ownership of the Slovenian entrepreneur Damian Merlak and is now living a new life. Moreover, the hotel has also brought a breath of fresh air for event organisers. Such a hotel in an excellent location, featuring such an appealing story, will undoubtedly be appreciated by organisers of incentive and corporate events. With its latest addition, Bohinj has solidified its position as one of the hottest, most interesting and authentic Slovenian incentive destinations.
ACCESSIBILITY
Bohinj can be accessed by public transport or by car. Either way, the hotel takes care of its guests as spacious parking awaits every guest. What is more, those arriving with electric cars can expect smooth sailing, as the hotel offers charging stations for electric vehicles. An alternative option is arriving by the nostalgic train stopping at the nearby Bohinjska Bistrica. The romantic journey is a sustainable substitute and, more importantly, a picturesque tour. Slovenia’s main airport is three-quarters of an hour away, and with the easing of restrictions regarding COVID-19, the accessibility is improving. Paths leading to Bohinj are among the most romantic ones in Slovenia, and we believe it is worth taking the time to experience them.
COLD STARTER - Architecture and aesthetics
The new image of Hotel Bohinj was designed by Ljubljana’s architectural studio Ofis and works initiated in October 2019. The facade itself speaks that the work of the architects succeeded. It is defined by larch wood, creating the warmth of the hotel rooms and a diverse outdoor image. The latter is a reflection of the surrounding Bohinj mountains. The interior boasts several local elements, including the hotel corridors, which are reminiscent of a haystack typical for Bohinj named stog or topler. The authentic doors and instagrammable views are attention grabbers equalled only by the exceptional dining room and other numerous eye-catching details found throughout the hotel. Above all, the hotel’s sustainable path strives to preserve cultural heritage, while the energy-efficient design of the hotel is proof of its sustainable practices. We are convinced that the architecture will live to see confirmation in expert awards.
WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience
It is challenging to evaluate the staff roughly a week after opening. Similarly to politics or any business, the crew must be given at least 100 days to see them play like a true team. Although there is enthusiasm, the entire experience altogether is not yet fully complete. However, the positive energy, ardour and desire to become the best hotel in Bohinj are present.
The culinary offer was put on the test only at breakfast, which proved to be average, and will have to be swiftly upgraded in the direction of local culinary products. The trademark Bohinjsko is well-renowned, and the guests of a hotel of this category certainly deserve to try and taste it. There is immense potential; nonetheless, the offer will have to be thoroughly polished. Traditional Slovenian gastronomy intertwines with the hotel’s story and is what guests expect to be presented in a modern and authentic manner. A significant amount of effort needs to be placed into this segment.
MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel
Hotel rooms
The rooms are one of the hotel’s gems, authentic and bustling with original details. Aromatic furniture from larch wood is naturally processed and pleasant to touch. The headboard of the bed is illuminated in the lines of the Bohinj mountains. The flooring is wooden, while the bed itself is unbelievably comfortable. Particularly intriguing is the room’s rough wall and ceiling, both appearing naturally. The lighting is sophisticated, giving away intimate light and reminding guests of antlers. Almost a requirement for business guests now, the room’s working desk is generously spacious. The minimalist bathroom is a continuation of the story and surprises guests with its sustainable approach with soaps and toilet paper. All in all, one of the most authentic and original hotel rooms we have stayed in recently.
Meetings centre
The smaller conference room is located on the basement floor. Unfortunately, it does not feature the sought-after daylight and airiness. Luckily, in the summer months, the hall can be replaced with the natural auditorium next to the outdoor fireplace. The otherwise pleasant restaurant can also serve as an event venue. Furthermore, the green surfaces surrounding the hotel offer numerous possibilities. In any case, we are convinced that investments in the conference and incentive product will not end with the current offer. Hotel Bohinj’s potential, location and sustainable story are exceptional, proven by the first corporate clients of the hotel immediately upon opening.
DESSERT – The extras
Although the centre of wellbeing with the outdoor pool is rather small, it is a pleasant addition to the hotel offer. After a long conference day, several special offers or relaxing at the zen pool is more than welcome.
FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES
Controlling the air-conditioning device in the hotel is rather clumsy. Moreover, the air-conditioning device is loud and disturbing at night. Considering the climate, such a device is not necessarily needed, and clearer instructions on shutting it down would be welcome.
TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES
The sustainable approach: the lighting is based on energy-saving LED technology, while the lights work via sensors; the built-in equipment is energy-efficient without light pollution; the hotel avoids using single-use plastic and much more sustainable actions, which usually cannot be found in new hotels.
FINAL IMPRESSION AND CREDIBILITY
The architecture in the hotel significantly contributes to the general well-being when staying at the hotel. Architects retained the local identity and achieved a sense of authenticity, familiarity and prestige. Architecture-wise, the hotel won me over. Hotel Bohinj is tailored to the needs of demanding incentive groups. To use their full potential, the team has a lot of hard work ahead of them in gastronomy and hotel services. I have no doubt that they will be able to eliminate beginner mistakes. Moreover, I am already convinced that Bohinj has gained a hotel that will bring demanding incentive groups to this beautiful part of Slovenia.
All in all, Hotel Bohinj’s positive attributes are shining, ensuring the attendees of your next event will be thrilled about the story of the new hotel. The hotel offers much and heralds the renaissance of the incentive product in this part of Slovenia.
