Where are the top three cleanest European capitals?

As parts of the world slowly exit COVID-19 travel restrictions, people everywhere are excited for the prospects of travelling again. But with travel-hygiene more important than ever, we are all looking to stay-safe while enjoying our travels. With this in mind, experts at End-of-Tenancy-London.co.uk set out to find the European capitals with the cleanest accommodation to help us plan our next getaway!

Using Airbnb, Booking.com, and Tripadvisor, End-of-Tenancy-London.co.uk calculated the average cleanliness ratings of accommodation within popular European capitals, to reveal the cleanest destinations in Europe.

This is the Cleanest Capital of Europe:

Lisbon comes in first place as the cleanest European capital with an average of 4.79 stars. Between the three websites analysed, Airbnbs in Lisbon had the highest ratings (4.89), with TripAdvisor following closely behind (4.87 stars). When looking at guest reviews, common sentiments included: “rooms felt clean and well cared for” and “very very clean and enforced mask-wearing/hand cleaning”.

In joint second place is Prague and Zagreb, both with an average cleanliness rating of 4.74 stars out of five. Zagreb also takes the crown as cleanest European capital on two of the three analysed sites; earning 4.93 stars on Airbnb and 4.67 stars on Booking.com.

Following closely in third is Rome and Vienna, both tied with an average rating of 4.73 stars out of five.

Russia’s capital, Moscow, earns fourth place with a cleanliness score of 4.71 stars.

Finally, rounding off the top five are Warsaw, and Paris with a joint overall cleanliness score of 4.70 stars. Romantic capital Paris is rated home to the most hygienic stays by TripAdvisor users (4.88 stars) despite its reputation for being dirty.

Berlin makes the top ten cleanest European capitals!

Berlin grabs the tenth spot alongside Athens and Budapest with an overall rating of 4.68 stars. Airbnb guests were the most satisfied with the cleanliness of their stays, rating the vibrant capital with 4.84 stars, followed by TripAdvisor (4.76 stars) and Booking.com (4.44 stars).

  • Copenhagen comes in 20th place, with an average cleanliness rating of 4.43 stars
