HISTORY DISCOVERY CENTRE

Estonian History Museum’s Maarjamäe Palace re-opened on the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia as a history discovery centre. The historical complex located near the seashore combines the newly renovated palace, the Estonian Film Museum and the historical stables building, all offering a unique environment for organizing events.

Maarjamäe Palace is the pearl of Maarjamäe History Centre. It was commissioned by Count Anatoli Orlov-Davydov from St. Petersburg as a family summer residence on the seashore. The story of the Estonian History Museum begins in 1802, when Tallinn’s town hall pharmacist, Johann Burchard (1776–1838), started a collection called Mon Faible (My weakness, in French). The inspiration for collecting came from one decoratively marbled Easter egg. The first exhibit was a Chinese opium pipe.
