On 17 November 2021, as part of the Slovenian Ambassador Programme, the Slovenian Convention Bureau held an online award ceremony, presenting this year’s Slovenian Congress Ambassadors – 17 individuals, whose dedication, commitment, international involvement and perseverance helped Slovenia host international scientific, professional and other business and sports events over the past couple of years.

The Slovenian Ambassador Programme was launched in 2019 with the support of the Slovenian Tourist Board, in cooperation with the Ljubljana Convention Bureau at Tourism Ljubljana and a number of cooperating partners. Today, the Slovenian Ambassador Programme has 67 ambassadors and is supported by 12 partners from all over Slovenia.

Due to the epidemiological situation, this year’s award ceremony was held in online form, live-streamed from the Štih Hall at Cankarjev dom.

The online participants were welcomed by Azra Botonjić, Head of the Slovenian Ambassadors Programme and Tadeja Pivc-Coudyser, Director of the Slovenian Convention Bureau. Opening speeches were also given by Maja Pak, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, and Petra Stušek, Director of Tourism Ljubljana – institutions that made yesterday’s award ceremony possible in the first place. The programme of the online event was spiced up by a musical performance by Maja Keuc – Amaya and Miha Koretič.

During the event, short interviews with this year’s Slovenian Congress Ambassadors were screened, where they told more about their motivation for organising the event as well as its importance for Slovenia. The full interviews will be available shortly on the Slovenian Ambassador Programme website.

Who are the Slovenian Congress Ambassadors?

The title of Slovenia’s Congress Ambassador 2021 went to 17 exceptional individuals. For the first time, the titles of Congress Ambassador »Rising Star« and Congress Ambassador in the field of economy were also awarded. Most of the ambassadors were nominated for scientific and professional events held between 2018 and 2020. Scientific and professional meetings with a minimum of 100 participants – at least half of them from abroad – were considered. Preference was given to events of regional, European and international/global associations that brought the highest possible international participation to the destination or were of outstanding international importance. For 2020, scientific and professional events with a minimum of 200 participants – at least half of them from abroad – were considered, which were held in a hybrid, online or virtual format due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The recipient of the honorary title of Slovenian Congress Ambassador 2021 is Prof. Dr. Pavel Poredoš, MD, who joined the event live in the studio. Prof. Dr. Pavel Poredoš has organised numerous international medical congresses during his long career.
