On September 6, 2022, Maribor will host the first “long table” event in the Styrian capital, dubbed Velvet dinner among vineyards. The unique gastronomic event will offer top cuisine bearing the signatures of Michelin chefs Uroš Štefelin, Marko Pavčnik and Sebastjan Plevčak.

The table of 150 guests will be served by students of the Maribor High School of Tourism and students of the Maribor Faculty of Tourism. With the pressing issue of staff shortages, the event’s organisers also aim to raise awareness of the potential of work in hospitality and tourism. The partners of the Velvet Dinner are the Maribor Institute of Tourism, the Maribor Faculty of Tourism, the Maribor High School of Tourism and the Maribor High School of Biotechnology.

Initially planned in June, the event was postponed due to bad weather. It is connected to tourism, gastronomy providers and educational institutions providing first-class wine and culinary experiences. The event will take place in a unique venue next to the vineyard under Maribor’s famous Kalvarija. Excellent wines from the wine-growing region of Maribor will accompany the equisite food creations.

Top Michelin cuisine and sparkling wine from the oldest vine in the world

Part of the superb five-course menu will be the creative plates prepared by the “young prodigies” of the participating catering and tourism schools, under the mentorship of renowned chefs Uroš Štefelin (Hiša Linhart) and Marko Pavčnik (Pavos). The continuation of the culinary evening will be under the helm of chef Sebastjan Plevčak (Restaurant Sedem). On the wine list, the star of the evening will be a new sparkling wine from Maribor’s 450-year-old Guinness record-holder, the world’s oldest vine.

Support for schools and the development of Maribor tourism

The Director of the Maribor Tourist Board, Jure Struc, said: “With our partners, we started the Velvet Dinner project with three key goals: we want to evolve the image of Maribor as an emerging gastronomic region; we are implementing measures from the new strategy of Maribor tourism; we are connecting students with a professional environment and institutions. Within the framework of the latter, we also raise awareness of opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry. For this purpose, we have produced a promotional video “Become the chef of your life”. This video promotes the partners of Velvet Dinner, who will expand their missions to develop Maribor’s tourism offer. The oldest vine is a beacon of the city’s wine and culinary offer, and we are the creators of visions and development guides, beacons to our youth and their creative drive.”
