NEW STATION FOR EVENTS

In spring 2023, the new valley station of the SchafbergBahn in the Salzkammergut was ceremoniously opened under the name “ErlebnisQuartier”. With a view of Lake Wolfgang, the modern architecture is impressive and the valley station is no longer just the starting point for the ride up the Schafberg.

Since 1893, Austria’s steepest cog railway has been transporting around 340,000 visitors a year from the valley station to the 1,783-meter-high summit of the Schafberg, climbing almost 1,190 meters on each trip.

After the investments and the renovation of the old route of the SchafbergBahn in 2018, another investment followed in 2020: The valley station, which had already existed for more than 30 years, was completely redesigned and rebuilt.

In the course of a Europe-wide architectural competition, the submission of Salzburg-based architects dunkelschwarz ZT OG was chosen as the winning project from among around 54 projects submitted from all over Europe.

The ErlebnisQuartier in the Salzkammergut region

As the name suggests, the new building will not only function as a station and ticket office but will also take visitors on a journey through the 130-year history of the SchafbergBahn cog railway and the 150-year history of Lake Wolfgangsee navigation (WolfgangseeSchifffahrt) in the museum area. The restaurant with its stunning roofed terrace, overlooking the lake, offers traditional Austrian food as well well as vegetarian and vegan options while the shop offers souvenirs and regional products from the Salzkammergut region.

The ErlebnisQuartier can also be rented exclusively (outside the operating hours of the SchafbergBahn) as an event location and offers space for up to 300 people.
