The European Stroke Organisation (ESO), whose head office is located in Basel, is pursuing an ambitious mission. It aims to sustainably improve treatment methods for strokes in our latitudes by providing comprehensive education. This is why it stages a conference on research and the clinical care of patients with cerebrovascular diseases every year. It was recently announced that the 10th ESO conference will be held in this city on the Rhine from 15 to 17 May 2024.

The ESO Conference offers an exceptional conference experience, with clinical trials, workshops and debates, and brings together medical professionals from different disciplines, institutes, and regions. More than 4,000 participants from 100 countries are expected to attend the next gathering, with many regarded as luminaries in their respective specialist fields. To accommodate them in a fitting manner, the organisers have booked not only all the meeting rooms at the Congress Center Basel but also those in the neighbouring Marriott Hotel and the Event Hall at Messe Basel. The conference will thus be one of the biggest of its kind ever staged in Basel.

This is hardly surprising, given that the city is regarded as a leading teaching and research location for the life sciences and medicine in Europe. For example, there is an ESO-certified Stroke Center at the University Hospital in Basel, led by Prof. Dr. U. Fischer and Prof. M. Psychogios and their teams. The organisation also opted for this city, however, because Messe and Congress Center Basel offer the ideal premises for combining exhibition space of more than 8,000 m2 with countless breakout sessions, panel discussions and lectures.

“As the local host, I am absolutely delighted to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ESO conference on home soil”, says Prof. Dr. Lyrer, Senior Consultant for Cerebrovascular Diseases at the University Hospital, who was responsible for initiating the event in Basel and is a former President of the Swiss Stroke Society.

It is a special honour for the latter to be hosting such a large conference in Basel and also reflects the high regard in which specialists from Switzerland are held in the international environment. The Swiss Stroke Society has driven forward the development of diagnosis and treatment options for strokes in Switzerland in a decisive manner over the past few decades. The society celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021, which was one reason behind its bid to host this international conference in Switzerland.
