Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the investors involved in the development of a sustainable alternative to meat—cultivated meat—in cooperation with the Dutch company Mosa Meat. The company is based in the city of Maastricht which is about to become a hot spot of a thriving biotechnology industry.

Located amidst this biotech hub in the south of the Netherlands, all lights seem to be green for success: Mosa Meat has obtained its B-corp certification, is committed to knowledge sharing by making the International Scientific Conference on Cultivated Meat possible, and is getting warmed up for European approval from the European Food Safety Authority.

B Corp certification Mosa Meat

As the world’s appetite for beef continues to grow, Mosa Meat is working to provide an alternative that is more sustainable, slaughter-free and just as delicious. Sustainability is in this company’s DNA, a fact that is further emphasized by the B-Corp certification the company has recently acquired. For several years, American actor Leonardo DiCaprio has been involved as an advisor to and investor in Mosa Meat. He is very pleased with the B Corp certification and sees Mosa Meat as a game-changer: “Mosa Meat continues to be a champion for change. I am proud to see Mosa Meat be the first cultivated meat company in the world to become B Corp Certified and hope it is the first of many.”

Open innovation platform

Mosa Meat believes it’s important to share knowledge and make it available worldwide. This was one of the reasons for launching an annual conference, with the help of the Maastricht Convention Bureau. The result was the International Scientific Conference on Cultivated Meat (ISCCM), an event which will be held for the ninth time in Maastricht. This is the world’s only independent conference that brings together people from a complete range of sectors, with the purpose of sharing knowledge to aid the progression of cellular agriculture. The conference will take place in MECC Maastricht from 15-17 October 2023.

Gearing up for future approval

After the conference in October, Mosa Meat will be gearing up for the first cultivated meat tasting with the Dutch government’s approval. The company doesn’t use any genetically manipulated materials, making their product very interesting for the European market. Mosa Meat is already involved in serious preparations for obtaining product approval from the EFSA, European Food Safety Authority.
