Although the number of entrepreneurs and employees working in tourism is lower compared to 2019 due to the pandemic, it is still true that tourism contributes significantly to the state budget of the Czech Republic. In 2022, this segment accounted for 2.22% of the gross domestic product and employed 225,500 people. This is according to data from the Czech Statistical Office on the Tourism Satellite Account. It is confirmed that promoting the Czech Republic abroad, as well as domestically, pays off and the Czech Tourism Office – CzechTourism continues this practice. Currently, it is preparing a campaign for this year, the aim of which is to attract especially creditworthy clients to the Czech Republic.

According to CSI data, the volume of tourism spending in 2022 will reach CZK 285.9 billion, up 84.3% year-on-year (before the pandemic it was CZK 308.2 billion). Foreign travellers accounted for 49% of total domestic tourism consumption, spending CZK 139.5 billion in the Czech Republic. The remaining 51% was accounted for by domestic visitors with CZK 146.4 billion. On average, foreign travellers spent 4.21 days in the country, while domestic guests stayed for 4.66 days.

“Although this data is from 2022, we can see from it that the tourism industry is really gaining momentum and is growing again after a COVID downturn. Indeed, this is confirmed by the number of tourists from last year who stayed in mass accommodation facilities in the Czech Republic. The most frequent among them were citizens of Germany, Slovakia, Poland, the USA and Great Britain. Not only them but also other markets selected by an exact method according to their creditworthiness will be the focus of our year’s biggest campaign. With this campaign we want to arouse interest in new segments and products and attract even more foreigners to our country,” says Director of the Czech Tourism Centre – CzechTourism František Reismüller and adds:  “Understandable reasons, this indicator dropped due to the pandemic, but it is currently on the rise again. In 2022, consumption in domestic and inbound tourism grew year-on-year. Year-on-year, foreign visitors generated 90 billion crowns more than the year before. And domestic travellers also spent more. In other words – it is definitely worth investing in tourism promotion.”

In 2022, the share of tourism in gross value added in the national economy was 2.18%. It was more than the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors combined. In comparison, in 2019, it was 2.76%. The share of tourism in total employment in the national economy reached 4.15% (in  2019, it was 4.41%). Employment in this sector is also growing. In 2022, one in 24 Czechs worked in tourism. Most often in the hospitality and hotel industry. The highest employment in terms of seasonality has long been in cultural services, where more women than men work. In terms of age, the majority of employees are between 25–34 and 45–55 years old.

The Tourism Satellite Account is a globally recognised system that enables international comparisons of tourism performance. It is endorsed by all major international tourism organisations (EUROSTAT, OECD, UNWTO). At the national level, it is an indispensable analytical and informative basis for decision-making by public authorities and the professional public. It is based on ten interconnected tables on an annual basis.
