Last month, the Ljubljana Convention Bureau at Tourism Ljubljana participated in a multi-day training session organized by the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), the world’s largest association in the meetings industry, held in Luxembourg.

The “ICCA Skills” training is of great importance for destinations aiming to attract more international scientific and professional meetings, as well as other business and sports events. It offers insight into all the processes of event organization and provides the necessary knowledge required for them.

For Ljubljana, greater expertise in this area translates to enhanced competitiveness and the ability to offer even higher quality services and support to event organizers. This increases the attractiveness of the Slovenian capital as a destination for international scientific and professional meetings, as well as other business and sports events, thereby boosting the local economy and enhancing its international reputation.

Successful international events draw professionals from all over the world, which also fosters the development of knowledge and innovation in the destination, providing it with long-term benefits.

The training also included the “Luxembourg Tourism Summit 2024,” which brought together industry experts to discuss developmental challenges and opportunities, with a central focus on sustainable development and the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence—a topic that was addressed throughout the training days in Luxembourg.

Speakers and participants at the summit discussed new sustainable strategies and practices that help reduce the environmental impact of tourism. Attendees learned about best practices from various destinations that have successfully implemented sustainable solutions.

Among the speakers was a sustainability consultant from the GDS-Movement agency, which promotes the socio-economic and environmental transformation of cities and regions towards regenerative development. Ljubljana, already one of the most sustainable cities in the world, is part of this initiative. The speaker presented the GDS-Index, which encourages such transformation. This means that destinations not only maintain sustainability but actively improve their environment and society, bringing them numerous long-term benefits. With the help of the GDS-Index, Ljubljana can also measure its progress in sustainability, compare its results with other destinations, and make appropriate decisions for further development. The results of this year’s measurements will be known in the fall.
