Porto tops the ranking as the best alternative city break. Nestled along the UNESCO-listed Douro River, this historic city offers cultural highlights such as the Livraria Lello Bookshop, São Bento Railway Station, and Mercado do Bolhão. It’s a must-visit for food lovers as well thanks to local delicacies such as francesinha (a hearty croque monsieur), cachorrinho (Porto-style hotdog), and Tripas à Moda do Porto (pork stew). Don’t miss the famous port wine, produced along the Douro for over two millennia.
Zagreb follows up second when it comes to alternative city breaks. Located along the Sava River, the Croatian capital is divided into the historic Upper Town and the bustling Lower Town, home to Ban Jelačić Square, shops, museums, and parks. The two areas are linked by the 120-year-old Zagreb Funicular. Zagreb also ranks highly for attractions such as the stunning St. Mark’s Church alongside its glorious Austro-Hungarian architecture.
Tirana rounds out the top three of the best alternative city breaks. Known for its Mediterranean climate, colourful architecture, and lush parks, Tirana offers historical landmarks like Skanderbeg Square, the Tirana Pyramid, Tirana Castle, and the Et’hem Bej Mosque. A unique attraction is the BUNK’ART museum, housed in former Cold War bunkers with five floors and an assembly hall, located near an active military base.
