Celebrated around the world on 22 April, global Earth Day aims to raise awareness and prompt people to take action to combat climate change. This year, the slogan of Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet”. In Ljubljana’s Cankarjev dom, the city’s premier event venue, Earth Day was celebrated with an intriguing programme that invited visitors to see the rooftop beehive, explore a photo-guided tour of an exhibition titled The Day May Break and watch an ecological documentary.

Cankarjev dom started the celebration at noon by distributing a thousand litres of compost in the Park of the Council of Europe. Visitors could bring sustainable bags, pots, and more to collect the compost.

From an urban beehive to a photo exhibition

In the afternoon, guests could see the one-off urban beehives towering above the building on the rooftop. Under the guidance of the master beekeeper, Franc Petrovčič, guests could explore the life of bees in the urban capital. Each participant received a bag with seeds of indigenous honey plants donated by the City of Ljubljana.

“It is better to be angry and active than angry and passive” – Nick Brandt

An hour later, the venue inaugurated an exhibition by Nick Brandt, one of the world’s most prominent environmental photographers. His exhibition, The Day May Break, is a global photography series that uniquely illuminates the devastating impact of climate change on people, animals and ecosystems. The illustrious photographer said this in regard to climate action: “It is better to be angry and active than angry and passive.”

In the evening, visitors could watch the screening of the film Terraforma, followed by a conversation with Dr. Tom Turk, biologist, biochemist, and professor at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. The screening is part of the Ecoscope program, which combines film screenings and discussions on the topic of ecology and environmental protection.

Sustainable catering for a green earth

On 24 April, Slovenia marks the Slovenian Day without Food Waste. To help raise awareness about reducing food waste, Cankarjev dom works in close cooperation with several local catering providers. One of their partners, Vivo Catering developed an innovative solution “VIVO Box To Go”, which allows guests to take leftover food with them and enjoy it later.
The Slovenian Day without Food Waste initiative aligns with the global Stop Food Waste Day on 30 April.
