The Meetings Star winners in 2024/2025 deserve special recognition. We talked to representatives of the leading, most swanky, outlandish, elegant and unique hotels in New Europe to hear about their recipe for success. Natalija Šahraj from Hotel Bohinj shared how they exceed expectations and how they finished among the best Slovenian boutique hotels.

Q1: What makes your destination truly unique for meeting planners?

Our destination seamlessly blends modern investments in tourism infrastructure and MICE offerings with an unwavering commitment to authenticity, nature, and the local community. We don’t simply follow trends; we offer a different, more genuine approach to business events. Here, meetings are not just meetings – they become immersive experiences that foster creativity, connection, and relaxation in a truly unique setting. We stand out not because we strive to but because we remain true to our essence—natural, sincere, and authentic. At the same time, we never compromise on service excellence and guest satisfaction.

Q2: If your destination were a personality, how would you describe it?

Our destination is like an enigmatic and captivating character—initially reserved, but once you take the time to explore, it reveals its full magnificence, warmth, and hidden gems. It surprises you with unexpected details, rich history, and a deep connection to nature. Its energy is both powerful and subtle, inspiring visitors and leaving a lasting impression through its breathtaking landscapes, authentic stories, and welcoming spirit.

Q3: What are the three key experiences that every event attendee should have when visiting your destination?

• Exploring natural wonders – experiencing stunning valleys, majestic waterfalls, a crystal-clear lake, and breathtaking mountains that create an unforgettable backdrop for any event.

• Engaging in active adventures – taking on exciting challenges like hiking, cycling, water sports, or even adrenaline-fueled activities.

• Connecting with nature – embracing moments of serenity, whether through a guided morning meditation outdoors, a mindful walk in the forest, a peaceful canoe ride on the lake, or watching the sunrise from a hilltop.

Q4: How has your hotel positioned itself as a leader in the meetings industry?

We position ourselves as a boutique, authentic, and sustainable destination, offering high-quality accommodations and an exclusive, non-mass-market experience. We are a hidden gem that redefines business meetings—blending productivity with relaxation. Here, attendees feel at home while being inspired by the surrounding nature, which fuels creativity and efficiency.

Q5: What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you foresee in the industry over the next three years?

One of the biggest challenges will be meeting the expectations of the premium segment, where exclusivity is no longer just about luxury but about unique and authentic experiences. Clients seek something truly special—immersive programs, a fusion of different travel experiences, and full integration into the local environment. MICE guests are no longer passive participants; they want hands-on involvement, from exploring natural wonders to engaging in culinary workshops and curated activities.

The greatest opportunity lies in the ability to adapt. Success will depend on continuous learning, innovation, and flexibility in an ever-changing landscape. While we cannot control external factors such as political or economic shifts, we can ensure we are agile and responsive to them.

Q6: How do you engage with international event organisers and decision-makers to showcase your hotel?

Through a strong presence at key international trade shows, hosting exclusive showcases and fam trips, and building strategic partnerships that allow firsthand experiences of what our destination has to offer.

Q7: How do you support local businesses, suppliers, and venues in growing their appeal for international meetings?

Since we are located in a more remote area, fostering strong collaboration and coexistence with the local community is both our responsibility and a significant advantage.

Our restaurant sources ingredients from nearby farmers and producers, ensuring fresh, local flavours. Activities such as guided tours, outdoor adventures, and cultural programs are led by local guides, artisans, and experts. This not only guarantees authenticity and high-quality services but also supports the local economy.

Q8: What initiatives do you have in place to ensure long-term growth in the MICE sector?

Artificial intelligence will never replace the role of MICE professionals, as the human touch is essential in event planning. Investing in talent development remains a top priority, ensuring adaptability and a personalized approach. However, embracing technological innovations is equally important—leveraging smart solutions can streamline processes, enhance guest experiences, and improve overall event efficiency.

Q9: What advice would you give to hotels looking to elevate their profile in the meetings industry?

Blending business with immersive experiences

Executive trainings and keynote speeches are increasingly moving away from traditional conference halls to unique venues—museums, heritage trains, rooftop terraces, parks, or even mountain peaks. Events should be designed as if they were experiences you would personally want to attend.

Creating unforgettable travel moments

Standard conferences, gala dinners, and sightseeing tours are no longer enough. The emotional impact is key—attendees remember extraordinary moments. A sunset atop a mountain or a hands-on workshop where they forage herbs and make cheese at a local farm creates a lasting impression far beyond a formal banquet. Memorable experiences strengthen team bonds and corporate connections, proving that after such events, teams can quite literally move mountains.
