NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

LOCATION

Jurys Inn once occupied the same area where the Botanique Hotel Prague stands today. The buzzing location in the dynamic Karlín district ticks all the boxes for a modern urban stopover. Everything is within arm’s reach here. Gradually, Botanique Hotel Prague began associating its identity with sustainability. Thanks to their programme Be Green by Botanique, they received the Green Key certificate, reduced their use of plastic, implemented an effective recycling system, introduced local and seasonal ingredients, and invested in energy-efficient technologies. The hotel celebrated a momentous milestone in 2024 with the renovation of all 214 rooms and public areas, thanks to a 4.4 million EUR investment. Yet, the story does not end here – in 2026, the hotel will expand, welcoming 47 new rooms and a novel conference centre. This will be another addition to Karlín’s growing portfolio of event venues. The hotel has one of the best strategic locations in Prague. Forum Karlín is in the immediate vicinity, making Botanique Hotel a top choice for event organisers seeking comfort, functionality, and sustainable urban practices.

ACCESSIBILITY

Following the catastrophic floods of 2002, the district of Karlín underwent a thorough reimagining and reinvigoration. Today, it is one of Prague’s most trending city quarters that resembles Berlin in many ways. Hotel Botanique is set right next to the Florenc traffic crossroads, allowing both locals and international guests to reach the hotel with ease. The main train station is just a few minutes away by metro, while Václav Havel International Airport is accessible in only half an hour. In the New Europe region, Prague tops the rankings in terms of transcontinental flights. The structure of guests in the city attests to this.

To explore the city’s nooks and crannies, we recommend using the highly intuitive, well-functioning, and user-friendly public transport.

Guests will appreciate that two metro lines converge right across the street, and the numerous tram and bus lines that converge here. Active guests can also venture out to the city centre on foot. The hotel itself is accessible to all; disabled guests can effortlessly access all hotel areas, the lift, and rooms. Guests can also use electric charging stations in the hotel’s parking garage. However, as the parking garage can only be accessed by an electric car lift, the more practical and affordable option is parking in front of the neighbouring Hilton. One of the hotel’s greatest advantages is the bicycle storage room, fitted with charging stations for electric bikes. Only a handful of hotels in Prague offer this option.

COLD STARTER - Architecture and aesthetics

Our first impression of the architecture was: never judge a hotel by its monolithic facade. Behind the classic modernist facade lies a cavernous horseshoe-shaped complex with a verdant interior atrium. Olgoj Chorchoj Architectural Bureau used sustainable details to make the interior appear memorable. They succeeded by thoughtfully using details and visual elements. Still, we had the odd feeling that we had seen all these elements in other hotels before. For instance, the charming graphics of plants evoke classic IKEA designs, albeit they appear to follow the brand’s graphic image. Similarly, the eclectic sustainable slogans adorning the walls lack a common denominator and appear generic. Perhaps the hotel should draw inspiration from its sustainable report. The hotel was indeed sustainably renovated, but with an eclectic approach. The green areas of the hotel, dotted with flowers and greenery, establish a connection with nature, if only symbolically. It is clear this hotel was designed to accommodate throngs of guests – here, quantity is prioritised ahead of quality or standout boutique design. The omnipresent sustainability slogans did not convince us that this hotel is truly sustainable. Regardless, their efforts are a step in the right direction.

WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience

none of the dishes seemed to have a label, making their sustainable promises hard to believe.

Our expectations were high in terms of gastronomy. The website and digital posters strewn across the hotel promised a grand, sustainable culinary experience. In reality, the breakfast was a completely underwhelming, mediocre continental breakfast with no standout dishes. Given that the hotel prides itself on its sustainable practices, we at least expected them to include the origin and source of ingredients and label them appropriately if they are indeed local. Alas, none of the dishes seemed to have a label, making their sustainable promises hard to believe. What we tried was far from authentic or local. The hotel should aspire to incorporate locally grown Czech apples or pears, homemade juices, and Fairtrade coffee.

The staff was equally disappointing. Being fully occupied, the understaffed personnel simply failed to cater to every guest. The overall experience reminded us of a frequented train station – hardly a best practice case of sustainable hospitality. One positive side was the excellent maintenance of the hotel. In a few years, it will be clear how well the hotel stood the test of time.

MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel

Hotel rooms

The so-called organic design has clearly set rules that this hotel adhered to. Typical features of such design include at least one coarse concrete wall and oakwood (or a variation) furniture that follows the softness of the organic lines. While we have seen this style before, the details exuded elegance and refinement in the room. We were surprised by the spaciousness of the writing desk, which is complemented by wonderful lighting. The centrepiece of the room is undoubtedly the bed – its quality and soft bed linen ensure a good night’s rest. The bathroom is adorned with grey terrazzo tiles that imbue it with a modern character. The shower is decent, although more attention could be devoted to accuracy in execution. One of the head-turning elements is the cosy reading lounger. Thanks to the lounger and the above-standard room size, the room is not as generic as it would be otherwise.

Meetings centre

Three meeting halls represent the core of the event capacities. Jasmine and Magnolia Halls can be combined into a single space that can accommodate up to 160 guests in a theatre setting, according to the hotel’s data. However, in line with the Meetings Star standards (1.2 square metres per person, DIN 15906), the area, measuring 154 square metres, can only accommodate 128 attendees. The hotel offers another smaller meeting room for 16 attendees. This mix of halls makes the boutique conference centre ideal for corporate events or incentive groups. The hotel does not offer any advanced solutions in terms of sustainability, such as sustainable event organisation or carbon footprint measurement.

DESSERT – The extras

The idea of having a rooftop beehive is fantastic, but the execution at this hotel could be better. While the hotel does not offer honey from the rooftop hive, guests can purchase honey made by local beekeeper Mr. Jiří Peca. This honey is also served at breakfast, which is the only true sustainable surprise.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

It is rather inconvenient if the drain in the shower is blocked, causing water to fill up. This might have been a coincidence, but certainly an unpleasant one.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

Despite apparent flaws, the holistic sustainability story is admirable. We say this because of the hotel’s laudable sustainable report. Hotels that prepare such comprehensive sustainable reports are rare and thus deserve respect and admiration. The report details numerous facts and figures, including that the hotel’s average energy consumption per overnight stay is just 23.4 kWh, compared to city rivals, where the energy consumption averages 70.2 kWh. The report also outlines that the carbon footprint per room is 186.9 kg CO₂e (GHG Protocol), which is better than the average in Prague.

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

The hotel’s sustainable endeavours are inspiring in many ways. Among their key activities, we must list smart heating and cooling, LED illumination, efficient water use, and championing environmentally friendly cleaning agents and materials. To boot, the hotel reduces waste by implementing several measures. By 2027, they plan to have an overview of energy and water use and incorporate more and more local and ecological products. Small, but consistent steps are helping the hotel realise its ambitious sustainable vision. Sustainable promises and reports sound great on paper. In reality, though, the hotel needs to evolve its soft skills – communication with guests and employees. It seems precious data and recommendations remain hidden in their report, which guests either don’t read or don’t understand. Here lies a golden opportunity.

FINAL IMPRESSION AND CREDIBILITY

Botanique Hotel Prague decided that their X factor will be sustainability, not as a trendy buzzword or slogan, but as a strategic path.

Competition among hotels in Prague is ruthless. Hence, the key to success lies in distinct differentiation. The owners of Botanique Hotel Prague decided that their X factor will be sustainability, not as a trendy buzzword or slogan, but as a strategic path. Their comprehensive sustainability report attests to their vision by transparently sharing data, from energy efficiency to carbon footprint. Their report gives their story credibility. Today, that is still very rare in the hospitality industry. Perhaps the hotel is still better at theory than practice, considering their ambitious slogans that do not deliver (advocating the gastronomy and interior design). However, the hotel has been setting standards in Prague. That is why we can consider this hotel a best practice case of responsible hospitality in the region. The hotel’s genuine sustainable aspirations, clear vision, and documented credibility will need to be enriched by consistent execution in practice and authentic experiences for hotel guests. Of course, the business reality needs to be considered as well. The management expects all 214 rooms to be occupied, which forces them to make sustainable compromises. Nevertheless, goodwill, consistency, and passion for making a sustainable transformation are admirable at Botanique Hotel Prague.
