Despite its central location, the hotel maintains an aura of serenity, free from the buzz of the urban centre. Another advantage is the free private parking, which is rare in other thermal resorts. In terms of event organising, this location has limited traffic and logistical infrastructure but tremendous potential for hosting boutique events, business, and incentive groups.
ACCESSIBILITY
Access to Hotel Bernarda is straightforward, especially for individual guests who come by car. The hotel offers on-site private parking with ample space, including clearly labelled disabled parking spots, which contributes to its inclusivity. For business guests who often arrive in groups or use public transport, access is slightly more complicated. The closest train station is in Turčin, some 13 minutes from the hotel by car. In such cases, additional logistical arrangements are needed in advance.
Franjo Tuđman Airport is 68 kilometres from the hotel. The hotel also offers airport transfers – a handy solution for guests arriving by plane. In this case, it coexists with the cityscape of Varaždinske Toplice. The architectural design of the Kogl & Plavec bureau is rational, functional and crafted according to the scale of a small, quaint thermal spa town. Pure lines and a subdued, neutral colour palette ooze a sense of calmness and elegance without appearing self-important. The interior follows a similar philosophy. The hotel rooms are furnished with high-quality materials and neutral colour tones. Even if the design appears somewhat cautious and predictable, it ensures a high level of comfort. Individual details, such as the stucco befitting luxury rooms, subtly evoke a sense of prestige. Despite the generally convincing design, we had hoped for more boldness and more noticeable nods to local cultural identity that would connect the story to the locale. While the architecture is well thought out and consistent, it follows a safe path that leaves room for future development and evolution.
WARM ENTRÉE - The staff and the culinary experience
The staff at Hotel Bernarda seem professional and engaged, with a great sense of personal touch. Their discreet, but effective support represents a key competitive advantage in such a small thermal destination.
At first glance, the cuisine at Bernarda Restaurant seems simple, but a closer inspection reveals a menu that is ambitious and well-made.
Remaining anchored in local and traditional flavours, the dishes are nonetheless interpreted with modern techniques and consistency. The gastronomy does not seek shortcuts but builds a persistent quality. Hence, the restaurant can be placed a step higher than most typical hotel restaurants in similar environments. The breakfast is functional and diverse, with basic flexibility (a vegan option), but lacks ambition to become the hotel’s central culinary masterpiece. Its added value lies in the ambience and sense of homeliness. Overall, the hotel appears refined and mature. Hotel Bernarda bets on tried-and-tested quality and gradual evolution. Its restaurant represents one of the key, yet unobtrusive parts of the experience.
MAIN COURSE – The meetings offering at the hotel
Hotel rooms
We stayed in the Luxury room with a balcony on the first floor of the hotel. Measuring 36 square metres, the room boasts a neoclassical hotel design. What caught our eye were the numerous stucco decorations adorning the ceiling and walls. Together with the golden additions, they exude an air of luxury. The massive wooden flooring, soft carpet and lounger in front of the imposing bed also add a touch of prestige. The centrepiece is the spacious bed that ensures guests wake up well-rested. Interestingly, the hotel’s owners also manufacture the mattresses. To boot, the bed linen is fantastic. The darkwood furniture beautifully contrasts the white walls and the giant tapestry of Michelangelo’s David behind the bed. The bathroom is spacious and elegant, featuring bright grey tiles on the floors and walls. Perhaps we only expected a more luxurious cosmetic line in the room. We must praise the rooms’ sound insulation, as we could not hear a beep from the wedding guests during our stay.
Meetings centre
Hosting events is not the hotel’s primary focus, per se. Still, the ambience and availability of boutique spaces facilitate the organisation of workshops, meetings and boutique events. We find the hotel ideal for incentive groups and teambuildings.
DESSERT – The extras
Hotel Bernarda edges out the competition thanks to its impressive wellness offering. The healing thermal water at 58 °C is the hotel’s trump card. Hotel Bernarda masterfully incorporated thermal water into its spa. With a slew of indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and whirlpools, guests can experience true pampering here. The spa offering is holistic – even external visitors can enjoy the balneology treatments and massages.
FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES
Despite the numerous advantages of staying here, there are a few details that should be addressed. The exceptional impression of a luxury room is somewhat marred by basic hotel amenities that are not in sync with the overall ambience and the hotel’s level. In addition, it is unclear how the hotel caters to large-scale events. We could not find any structured data for event organisers. The weakest point of the hotel is its website, which is in dire need of a modern overhaul across content, visuals, and user experience.
TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES
The hotel cooperates with local suppliers and artisans, thereby encouraging the inclusion of local providers in its ecosystem. In turn, this helps the hotel reduce its carbon footprint thanks to shorter transport routes. Their approach means guests can enjoy fresh, high-quality produce daily. At the same time, the hotel supports the region’s sustainable development.

With the new addition, the town has begun targeting smaller incentive groups and boutique event organisers seeking a serene environment, a personal approach, and quality experiences. The surroundings offer a wealth of experiences, from thermal fun and wellness pampering to exploring the cultural heritage and local stories. All this presents a possible evolution of incentive programmes. The essence of the experience remains Bernarda Restaurant, which punches well above its weight and is a reason in itself to visit this part of Croatia. It can easily rival restaurants that are considerably more expensive and renowned. Another element that adds credibility to the hotel is its price-performance ratio: it remains noticeably more affordable than other hotels in regional spa destinations. Hotel Bernarda is not your run-of-the-mill event hotel, but a carefully crafted boutique meeting hotel that convinces with its ambience, story and personal approach. These three elements are its strong suits.
