The events industry knows how to bring people together. Usually, it is for a conference, a celebration or a carefully planned occasion. This time, the people behind Prague Event Hub came together for something different: to help others through the things they could spare.
Colleagues across the Hub’s venues, hotel, shopping centre and leisure businesses joined a collection for Nadace Moment, a Czech foundation whose charity shops give donated belongings a new home and use the proceeds to support non-profit organisations. What began with people opening their wardrobes and sorting through their bookshelves became a shared act of generosity, reaching well beyond the workplaces where it started.
Nearly 150kg of donations, given with care
The response exceeded expectations. Together, the teams donated 149.12kg of shoes, books, crockery, glassware, accessories, decorations, games and toys. The care taken over those donations mattered as much as the quantity. Just 1.51kg was unsuitable for resale — an exceptional result that earned the collection Nadace Moment’s highest rating, 1.
“We know how much effort it takes to get colleagues across different buildings involved, explain why a collection matters, and encourage everyone to sort through their belongings. That makes us all the more grateful for the energy Prague Event Hub brought to this initiative. They have rescued things that might otherwise have ended up as waste. Now those items will have a second life in our shops across the country, while helping the charities we support,” says Iveta Morávková of Nadace Moment.
Even the dolls had their hair brushed
Behind the total were small, thoughtful acts that no set of figures could fully capture.
The team at Cubex Centre Prague made the largest contribution among the participating businesses. The most generous individual donor was Michal Soukup, director of Conference Centre City, who donated the most items.
His wife helped get everything ready. She freshly washed the items, cleaned the donated belongings and even brushed the dolls’ hair before they set off for their next home. That small detail says a great deal about the collection. This was not simply a chance to clear some space at home. It was a way of passing things on with care, so they could bring someone else a little happiness.
A second life for things. A helping hand for others.
Through Nadace Moment, the value of a donation goes beyond the person who buys it. Its sale also helps fund organisations caring for people, supporting families and protecting the natural world. Among them is Mobilní hospic Ondrášek, which helps people with terminal illnesses spend the end of their lives at home, close to their loved ones. Fandi Mámám supports single mothers, while other beneficiaries include Společnost pro ranou péči, Denní stacionář Žebřík, Czech Bikes for Gambian Schools, Platforma pro včasnou péči, Sdružení D and Nejste sami.
The foundation also supports environmental and biodiversity conservation through organisations including Česká koalice pro ochranu biodiverzity and Save Elephants.
A box of jigsaws or a toy left untouched on a shelf may seem like a small thing to give. Yet the money it raises can contribute to hospice care, help a family with a child, support a single mother or protect nature in the Czech Republic and beyond. The person donating it may never meet those who benefit, but their contribution can still make a difference.
More than neighbouring venues
Prague Event Hub brings together Cubex Centre Prague, Conference Centre City, Panorama by Verdi Hotels, Arkády Shopping Mall and Form Factory in Prague’s Pankrác district. Together, they connect event spaces, accommodation, dining, shopping and leisure in one location.
This collection showed what else that connection can make possible. People who usually work together on conferences, congresses and corporate events found another reason to join forces. There was no need for a major fundraising campaign or a large financial donation. It began with people looking at what they no longer needed and seeing what it might still mean to someone else.
Nearly 150kg of belongings, no longer needed in one home, can now do good in another and help others along the way.
