Maribor is this December bursting at the seems with festive events that celebrate the last month of the year and the arrival of the new year. The festivities also mark the advent time particularly getting lively the last days before Christmas.

HIKING WITH LAMPS TO THE PEKRSKA GORCA HILL

Any congress or business guest to Maribor, the second largest Slovenian city, can experience a special Christmas Eve if joining the hike to the Pekrska Gorca with a lamplight. The lamplights symbolize the fire from the holy city of Betlehem. Hiking with lamps is a traditional event in Maribor on Christmas Eve. When the hikers reach the top of the Pekrska Gorca hill, they then join the Midnight Service at the church on top of the hill. At the venue, the hikers are served tea, mulled wine and sweet delights. The hikers join also from the surroundings town and villages.

NATIVITY SCENE IN FRANCISCAN CHURCH

Next day, on the 25th of December, on the Christmas Day, the traditional Nativity Scene in Maribor’s Franciscan Basilica will welcome visitors. The viewing will be possible until the 2nd of February 2020, and it will be open every day between 10 in the morning and 6 in the evening, while on Sundays and Holidays from 12 as the mornings are reserved for holy services.

THE FRANCISCAN BASILICA IN MARIBOR

In the centre of Maribor’s Old Town the visitor to this medieval city can’t miss the beautiful red-bricked Franciscan Cathedral with Monastery. The Basilica of Our Mother of Mercy was built between 1892 and 1900 on a place of a former 12th century monastery.
