On the opening night of this year’s 12th Conventa trade show, the largest event in the field of business and congress tourism in New Europe, Ljubljana again received the prestigious Meeting Star Award as a congress destination in the category of cities that can host events for up to 2,000 people. Meetings Star Award for the best meeting destinations, hotels, and convention centre in New Europe is every year conferred by Kongres Magazine and Conventa. Slovenia’s capital already in 2018 received the award, while in 2019 it was ranked among the top ten destinations.
Ljubljana this year won in the L category, cities hosting events for up to 2,000 participants, among the cities like Zagreb, Tallinn, Hague, Krakow, Venice, Bratislava, Vilnius, Thessaloniki, Salzburg and Innsbruck. “Excellent achievements are the result of the planned integration of congress and tourism providers with the aim of increasing the visibility of the destination together and improving our competitive position in the international congress market,« said Director of Ljubljana Tourism, Petra Stušek, MA, when accepting the award. »Development of congress tourism significantly contributes towards reaching one of the most important strategic goals of Ljubljana tourism, which is to extend the stay of guests, increasing consumption, and de-seasonalisation.”
Meetings Star Awards jury, which consisted of evaluators in the role of ‘hidden guests’, visited 99 European destinations and evaluated the factors that significanlty affect the city’s competitiveness for business meetings. Evaluated were the optimal combination of the number of hotels and hotel rooms in the 4 and 5 star category that are most popular with congress guests, the maximum capacity of banquet and seminar halls, the largest halls in the city, and the number of residents at the destination.
Meetings Star Award winners were announced at the Meetings Star Ceremony that took place along Conventa’s welcome reception on 21 January in the Linhart Hall of Cankarjev dom. Destinations were presented in four categories: Vienna won in the XL category (destinations that can accommodate more than 2,000 participants), in the category of L, which can host up to 2,000 participants, Ljubljana celebrated; Dubrovnik won in the category of up to 1,200 participants (category M), while Kranjska Gora in the category of destinations, which can host smaller meetings for up to 600 participants (category S).
