IN THE UNDERGROUND REALM OF GEOLOGY

Underground events rank among the most unique and exclusive experiences in Slovenia. The recently opened Rudnik Sitarjevec offers visitors an insight into the diversity of geological natural heritage and the richness of the region’s mining tradition. Owing to its remarkable geological features, the mine continues to attract geologists and mineral enthusiasts alike — and even more so event organisers in search of something truly distinctive.

Rudnik Sitarjevec in Litija is one of the oldest and best-known mines in Slovenia, with a rich history and a long tradition of extracting a variety of metals. The mine was already active in Roman times and remained in operation until the 20th century, with most activity focused on the extraction of lead, zinc, iron, copper and mercury. The name “Sitarjevec” derives from the hill in which the mine is located. The extraction of lead and zinc was particularly significant, as these metals were in chronic short supply across Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries.

A new chapter in the history of the mine

Following the closure of the mine, Rudnik Sitarjevec remained abandoned for several years, but today it is open for guided visits and smaller events by prior arrangement. An excellent incentive experience for small groups is a guided tour through the mine tunnels, where visitors can observe distinctive underground formations along the way, followed by a traditional Sitarjevec miners’ snack and škratov šmorn (a local-style pancake dish).

Sitarjevec Mine has also become a venue for a range of cultural and educational events. From time to time, thematic programmes are organised, including seasonal celebrations, mining workshops for children, and exhibitions of minerals and artworks related to the mine. The site can accommodate between 10 and 20 participants. Today, Sitarjevec Mine is therefore much more than a mining museum — it is an engaging venue that preserves the rich mining heritage of Litija.
